6 Tips for a Successful Remote Internship | Qureos

The COVID-19 outbreak placed a hard stop to many things, including internships, apprenticeships, and campus placements. Finding an internship may seem harder than ever with many companies choosing to go remote or canceling their programs for the year. According to a research report by Yello, 64% of students who had their internships canceled did not receive any compensation and 85% don’t know how to explain a canceled internship gap on their resume.

What are remote internships & could it be the solution?

A research study by Global workplace analytics unveiled that remote workers are 35%-40% more productive than their office counterparts. Remote and virtual internships are being adopted by companies all over the world and offer young professionals a chance to gain experience virtually and improve their resumes. Taking on internships virtually also means that you can work with companies and diverse teams from anywhere in the world as long as you can work independently with minimal supervision.

How to be successful with a remote internship?

  • Set goals and understand the expectations

An internship is a perfect opportunity to learn new skills and gain hands-on experience but it may not be effective if you were to go into it without any goals or understanding what is expected of you. Have an open conversation with your superiors about what your goals are- be it skill or career development, academic learning, or personal growth. If you’re also looking for a permanent position shortly after the internship, be transparent about it so that the management could possibly look into creating or finding a position for you. It is also imperative that you ask about what is expected from an intern like yourself- contributing to team projects, supporting other team members with tasks, taking on specific responsibilities, etc.

  • Create a work schedule & stick to deadlines

Plan out your responsibilities and tasks for the week and map it into smaller blocks of work. Begin every day with a to-do list of tasks to be completed and focus on getting it done over the course of the day. Communicate with your supervisor and rearrange your work schedule if you face delays or require more time to finish a piece of work. Additionally, using free tools like Trello or Evernote may help plan your schedule and keep deadlines in mind.

Ask Questions & Overcommunicate
  • Ask Questions & Overcommunicate

It may seem daunting to complete tasks that have been assigned to you in a remote setting but it’s important to ask questions. As an intern, you are not expected to know the answers always, ask for more details and guidelines to complete tasks. Communicate with your supervisor about how they would like to receive updates – be it through emails, chat, or even third-party platforms like Slack

Share daily, weekly and bi-weekly updates to stay on track with your work plan and over-communicate if needed.

  • Have feedback sessions

Check-in with your supervisor at the beginning and end of every week and open up about what you have learned, difficulties that you faced, and ask for guidance or support. If your supervisor prefers to have a face-to-face conversation, prepare for video calls and arrange your notes, questions, and thoughts prior to keep it smooth and short. Take feedback very seriously to improve your skills, attitude, and work ethic.

  • Create a dedicated workspace

Select a quiet area in your house to be your workspace with minimal distractions and away from the rest of the family. Declutter the area and set up a desk with space for your laptop and other items you would need during work hours. You could add a plant, family pictures, or anything else to personalize your work desk. Ensure that you have a comfortable setup to avoid physical strain and take regular breaks to walk around and stretch. Avoid working from your bed, couch, or any other places where you might be more prone to relax. At the end of each day, tidy your work area and keep it clean for the next day.

  • Ask for a letter of recommendation

An endorsement from your supervisor on the company letterhead will add value to your resume when applying for jobs in the future. You could also ask your supervisor to leave a recommendation for you on LinkedIn and it will definitely help build and add credibility to your profile. Ensure to give time to provide this by asking for it a few weeks prior to your internship end date.
